The 26 sandstone carvings, believed to be over 1,000 years old, were exposed by shifting sand and ocean currents on a beach fronting a U.S. Army recreation center on the Waianae Coast. These anthropomorphic stick figures represent some of the most significant rock art discoveries in the Hawaiian Islands, providing a tangible connection to the ancient Polynesian settlers who first arrived during the 10th to 11th centuries AD.
